A New Challenge

Originally I started this blog to write about my half marathon training. Since I have completed it, I thought I would write about my new challenge. I've recently decided to cut out gluten from my diet. January 1st was the first day. I made it two weeks before I had a cheat. Honestly it's as hard as I thought it was going to be. Fast forward three months and I am not doing as good as I'd like.

I started doing some research about eliminating gluten from my diet when my psoriasis starting flaring up really bad. It did this after Eli was born but not as bad as this time. It's never really been something that's bothered me but that has changed. It can now be painful, super itchy, and bleeds.

The research I found regarding psoriasis and gluten is interesting. Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition. When you continually eat something that your body is allergic to (knowingly or unknowingly), it creates inflammation in your body. This can cause a host of problems. People who eliminate gluten see improvement in their skin, and reversal of their symptoms entirely....sometimes.

Psoriasis can be a lot more tricky, there are a lot of trigger foods:

Coffee
Chocolate
Tomatoes
Peppers
Eggs
Oats
Barley
Wheat
Rice
Corn
Potatoes
Nuts
Seeds

On top of these things I shouldn't consume, I also have specific allergies or intolerances:

Bananas
Apples
Raspberries
Nuts
Peanut butter
Eggs
Seeds
A lot of other things sometimes I can't even remember.

So I think I've been having mental struggles with how restrictive things will
be if I really want to see improvement with my psoriasis. Sure I can just start with eliminating gluten. I'm working on it, slowly but surely I think I can do it.
